The Office of the Conservation Regulator (OCR) has approved logging through a critically endangered Leadbeater’s possum buffer for road access into a contentious coupe in Toolangi Victoria. It was scheduled to be logged on Monday this week but has been disrupted by community protesters and logging has been unable to commence.
“Logging machines moved into the forests on Monday despite community protests that have been continuing all week. It’s crazy that ordinary citizens have to step in when the government fails to protect critical habitat.”
“The Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio has had years to make forest protections from logging robust, but she has consistently failed in her role as Minister to implement the necessary changes to stop Victoria’s wildlife from going extinct.”
“The Minister’s so-called reforms haven’t led to any meaningful changes, they’re worse. When species are on the fast-track to extinction, serious measures should be put in place to protect them. Instead her Environment Department is facilitating the senseless destruction of their habitat.”
